When Your Job Drains You: 3 Myths Debunked

Change is terrifying, isn't it? We're creatures of habit, even when those habits keep us miserable. In my talks with countless individuals who feel drained and stuck in their jobs, I've noticed a recurring trio of reasons as to why they're apprehensive about seeking new horizons. However, if there's anything the world has taught us, especially post-COVID-19, it's that the traditional 9-to-5 job is evolving. And so should our perceptions. Let's dive into these three myths:

1. "I Won't Find The Same Flexibility Elsewhere."

The global pandemic has irreversibly transformed the way businesses operate. What was once a luxury for a handful of employees - working from home and flexible hours - has now become a prevalent practice across industries. In fact, according to a study by the World Economic Forum, 81% of business leaders believe that remote working will continue post-pandemic. So, if flexibility is your concern, you're in luck. The modern workspace, moulded by the events of the past few years, champions flexibility. Hence, there's a high probability that there’s a role out there that offers you the freedom you now cherish and don’t want to let go.

2. "Another Job Won't Pay As Much."

Salary is crucial; no one can deny that. But let's put it into perspective. How much value do you place on your psychological well-being? The cost of staying in a job that drains your mental energy can be much higher than any paycheck. Remember, there's a diverse job market out there. Different roles, industries, and, yes, different salaries. I’m living proof that it is possible to decide you want to do something different, find a course, retrain and begin again! With the rise of the gig economy and the surge in entrepreneurial spirit over the last 10 years or so, many are even embracing self-employment. This shift means you can craft your passion into a lucrative venture (especially if you have a great coach! I know I’ve needed mine!). As per the McKinsey Global Institute, independent workers now make up around 20-30% of the working-age population in the US and EU-15 countries. Evidently, there's a realm of opportunities where money meets passion.

3. "I Fear Potential Rejection."

Here's a perspective shift: every risk you don't take is a guaranteed closed door. If you're not applying because of the fear of rejection, you're essentially saying 'no' to yourself without giving others a chance to say 'yes'. By taking that leap of faith and applying, you create a plethora of potential 'yes's for yourself. What sounds better? One guaranteed 'no' or multiple potential 'yes's’? According to a survey by CareerBuilder, on average, job seekers apply for 27 jobs before landing a new one. So, rejections may be a part of the journey, but they're a small price to pay for ultimately finding a job that respects both your professional skills and your well-being.

In essence, no job is worth sacrificing your psychological safety. It’s time we realise our worth, understand that there are a multitude of roles that align with our desires and aspirations if we have clarity on what they are (and if you don’t, find a reflective space for yourself! A coach is a great resource for this and there are loads of coaching services available these days with a quick google!), and most importantly, believe that we always have options. The job landscape is richer, more varied, and more flexible than it has ever been. You have options!! The choice, as always, is yours. How many doors of potential 'yes's’ will you knock on?
